The easiest way to do this is to use ssh instead of telnet/rlogin. ssh is a secure shell, which means your password doesn't go over the network in plain text. Also, it automatically sets the DISPLAY variable so you don't have to worry about it. ssh can be found in the non-US section of the Debian archive, because it may not be exported from the USA. You can import it, though. Depending on the version you install it depends on either gmp or gmp2 and either zlib1 or zlib1g, all of which are in section 'libs', IIRC.
