Dpkg passes some options on to dpkg-deb and handles some itself, but dpkg-deb also has some options that can't (I don't think) be accessed through dpkg. For example: dpkg-deb --info will give you quite a bit of information about a package, includeing depends and a long description, although dpkg -s gives you the same. Check it out, maybe some of the things you want are there.
