Yes, it does check for bad blocks on my machine (hamm) with either
syntax

mkfs.ext2 -c /dev/hdxx    OR  mkfs -t ext2 -c /dev/hdxx

of the command, as long as the -c is used.  Not sure I understand what
the author is talking about there.
