I seem to recall reading somewhere that lredir does not work with FreeDOS, or something along those lines. If you want an alternative to M$-DOS, think about Caldera's OpenDOS or DR-DOS. This is free for non-commercial use (Hence, not strictly 'free' as we debian ppl. tend to think of free...) and can be downloaded from their FTP site. Quite a nice DOS, IMHO.
