I could always use X after the server crashed.  Just kill it and start
it up again.  Worked fine.  But the text consoles were obliterated by
something very similar to your vertical stripes.

Yes.  This is how I noticed that all of the text consoles were
obliterated by vertical stripes.

After such an incident, I had 3 options:
1 - Use my computer remotely 
2 - Use X locally
3 - Reboot
