I've been trying the same thing. So far I have been able to install Debian Hamm from 1.44 disks using the "Installing Debian Linux 2.0 For X86" instructions on the Debian site. But after the installation is finished the boot disk fails right after it says "No mail." The last two lines on boot-up read: Bash: Fork: Cannot allocate memory # (at this point the HD sounds like its writing and no commands are accepted) I've tried installing it three times with the same result. I assume its a memory problem and I can't add more RAM. Does anyone know if there is an older version of Debian or another version that will work with a 386 and 4Megs of RAM? (Something I can get via FTP.) Thanks, Larry > boot: [I hit Enter.] > Loading lowmemrd.bin ... > That's as far as she goes. It hangs there, all night. I > have to hard reboot.
