I have the Intellimouse Explorer, and I get the same behaviour with the default bootup. But have you tried booting Knoppix with "knoppix wheelmouse" at the bootprompt? This enables IMPS/2 protocol for wheelmice. If this doesn't work, you could try the "expert" option. This gives you the option to interactively configure stuff. I haven't got around to trying either of these myself, and I've just lent my Knoppix CD to someone. See http://download.linuxtag.org/knoppix/knoppix-cheatcodes.txt for a list of boot-time options.
