a) If you mean the window manager: (As root) edit /etc/X11/window-managers and put the manager of your choice at the top of the list. (This affects everybody on the machine; to change things for yourself alone, edit your own .xinitrc or .xsession file.) b) If you mean the xterm which is started by default, you can add a number of other programs, either in your personal .xsession or .xinitrc or in the global file: /etc/X11/Xsession. [.xinitrc is used if you run startx to begin X; .xsession is used if you are running xdm.
