Some words describing the error may help. If it is possible add the messages just before the startup hangs. I think you have change something in your hardware that causes the error because slink boots very well with the 2940 adapter.
Some tips: check the hardware connections, look for IRQ's confilcts, and verify the BIOS settings of your motherboard and the SCSI adapter are correct.
