Just a guess. rlogind requests the clients hostname from the source address (see "man rlogind"). If the client's hostname is not listed in the /etc/hosts file, then it will try to get it from the default nameserver, which I assume is on the other side of your modem at the ISP. The quick-fix is to add your Linux/Win95 client's hostname as an entry in the /etc/hosts of the server, assuming that you don't have any DNS servers running on your local network. -Mitch
