i think the better solution is to add yourself to the audio group as opposed to giving every user the rights to write to the device, though if this is just a personal machine it probably won't matter. the other problem you might be having is if you're using some kind of sound daemon like artsd or esd. if so, realplayer probably won't work very nicely with it, though there's still ways to get around it (like esd comes with some kind of dsp simulating program, but i don't use esd myself, so you'll have to do some research) sean
