Yesterday I installed Debian Linux for the first time and ran into a problem. I have Debian Linux 2.0.34, using the CD distributed by Heiko Schlittermann (if that is of importance). For some reason I couldn't fix, the xinitrc has not been installed or was not found while installing the packages with dselect, so I couldn't configure the X11 (XFree86) for my system (graphics card etc.). Checking the list of installed packages I didn't see any hints that installation was incomplete. Will it be sufficient to retry configuration with /usr/sbin/xbase-configure, and what is the "force" option for? And if the problem with the undetected xinitrc reappears: what do you recommend to do? - My graphics card is ELSA Winner/SPEA Mirage V7 VESA S3 Trio64, judging from the hardware compatibility HOWTO that sould be no problem, right? Additionally, I made a mistake during installation later: when choosing the graphics card drivers, I set the driver spec to "package maintainer's" instead of "keep former one" (which was the default, I idiot) as I thought, there would be no former one, as it was a new installation. Now the S3 driver I had specified before was substituted by something like XFREE86_NONE or so, and I have no idea how to recover. Please, has anybody some hints for me on how to get these problems solved and X11 installed?
