I developed this same problem after upgrading to slink and I was unable to locate the cause but I believe Debian changed a file (I forget the name of the file) that has the names of the allowed window managers. I just uninstalled xdm and that solved the problem. -- Andrew [PGP5.0 Key ID 0x5EE61C37]
