Update from pegreenwood: Last night I went at it using apt-get install to try to get some of the hung-up packages. This worked and I then finished off running dselect again. Everything except gcc_2.7.2.3-7.deb unpacked and set up, so I'll be fumbling around for awhile now until I break down and buy a book.
