menu.hook is created by the update-menus program from the menu package. When you installed the wmaker deb, it should have created a file /etc/menu-methods/wmaker that update-menus uses to create the menu. Run update-menus as root, and see if it creates the menu.hook properly for you. Then, add the single line "menu.hook" _with_ the double quotes to your GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu file to have it use that generated file. P.S. Was it really a crash, or did it just abort complaining about the missing file?
