Personally, I use the GNU Privacy Guard (GPG): http://www.gnupg.org It's currently in beta - what isn't in the Linux world :), with 1.0 due out next month. It works quite well, especially with Mutt. Though it seems the potato Mutt doesn't have gpg support, so I had to compile that myself.
