Hello! I think that a good choice would be a card with the Nvidia TNT2 chipset, like the Diamond Viper V770. These cards have 32MB RAM on-board, and I have seen them work very nicely with Linux. We have run Quake II, and Quake-III-test with open-gl (glx) acceleration, and they work fine.
I would also consider the new Matrox G400, it is supposed to be very good too.
