I managed to install some packages manually but apt-get still complains when I
try to install esound or do an upgrade:

lilypad:/home/pollywog#apt-get upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
  ae: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
  gimp: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
  jed: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
libgnome32: Depends: esound but it is not installed
  mc: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
  most: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
  newt0.30: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
  rgrep: Depends: slang1 (< 1.3) but 1.3.9-1 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

It wants to remove packages such as rgrep, which I do not want to remove.
