Okay,  I fixed it, but I don't know why it works.  I copied
/etc/X11/fonts/misc/xfonts-base.alias to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias (which didn't exist for some
reason).

It's a quick fix, but I would appreciate knowing what's actually going on.
