I use g77 regularly and linked it against commercial fortran compiled code as well as C compiled code. If you use the g77 command to link your code it will supply the appropriate run time library. If you link with gcc then you need to include -lg2c in the link. This library seems to provide an interface between the standard fortran library routines and libc which then does most of the work.
