A quick look through the changelog for the versions between slink and potato didn't show and y2k fixes but I did find the following: alien (6.26) unstable; urgency=low * If 822-date fails, the error now suggests installing dpkg-dev. This is way up there in the alien faw(sic, faq) and I'm tired of answering it. Since you did not get a suggestion about dpkg-dev I assume you are using a version prior to 6.26. Just to make sure, do you have dpkg-dev installed? In slink dpkg-dev was only a Recommends dependency for alien, in potato it is a Depends dependency.
