Hi--

This is probably a very basic question, so apologies in
advance. I am at the very start of the installation process:
I boot from the Debian CD, and immediately come to the following
problem.

In the instructions for things in the Debian installation program,
the step of partitioning my hard drive is skipped. When I try to
select it manually, I get the following message:
"No hard disk drives could be found. Make sure they are
cabled correctly and are turned on before the system is
started. You may have to change driver settings when you
start the system with a command at the "boot:" prompt, or
you may have to load a driver that is in a loadable module
     to solve this problem."

I have tried typing various things at the "boot:" prompt to try
to get the program to recognize the existence of my hard drive.
I have tried variations on:
   hda = 1663, 255, 63
with "hd", "hd1", "hdb" tried in place of "hd", the numbers being,
respectively, the number of cylinders, heads, and sectors/track
the 'system resource report' says my hard drive has. I have tried
including the numbers both alone and within angled brackets, and I
have tried leaving out and putting in spaces between the elements
in the command I gave above.

I suspect that part of the problem might be that my computer is very
new, and that the program doesn't know how to recognize a hard drive
of this type. I should also note that it is a Gateway--a friend told
me that they "sometimes add things" to their products.

I would of course be very happy to include any other information
which you need to answer my question--I just didn't know what to
include here; just let me know and I'll send a follow-up message.

Thanks very much in advance, and best wishes,
