What exactly is the command you use to try mounting, you'll probably tried all these of course... but just to be sure:
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt (you never know what windows could do...)
