USB Mouse under debian Linux

I need help getting my USB mouse under linux working. I have completely no idea how to do this and how to add it into my linux system to get it running.
An easier way would be to get a ps2 adapter, but i want to use it under USb.
Ive updated my kernel to 2.2.4, what ever the lastest one is.
 
any 'detailed' infomation would be appreciated
