Seeking help persuading a desktop and laptop to talk to each other over a private network (192.168.0.0).
The 'link' LEDs at both ends remain dark and no communication appears to be taking place. Ping from either side results in 100% packet loss, and telnet from either side results in 'No route to host'. It's just some silly misconfiguration, I hope. More details below, all help welcome. Nick Desktop ------- Mostly Slink plus upgrades to get to 2.2.14. It has two Linksys ethernet cards. One connects to a DSL modem, the other to the laptop. The card connected to the DSL modem works fine, the other doesn't. The result is the same with the cards' roles swapped in /etc/network/interfaces, so I know that both cards can work. Same with cables swapped, so both cables are OK. netbase version is 3.18-1.
