Usually 'ntpdate' is only used to synchronize if you have big time-differences. The ntpd can only synchronize if the difference between the local client and the time-server is less than 1024 seconds. So installation using Debian will ask you if you want to use ntpdate once (only when the system is starting up...). The rest will be done by the daemon. It works great...
