(list added to distribution, it appears to have fallen off) If you're running an X window manager from the system init scripts (look for a file matching /etc/init.d/*dm), you want to stop it. The following should work though it's a bit broad:
$ for file in /etc/init.d/*dm; do $file stop; done ...this should stop your X windows session. Otherwise, look for processing matching 'x': $ ps lax | grep -i x ...again, that's broad, but one of these should be your X windows process. Likely candidates include xdm, kdm, gdm, wdm, xinit, startx, X, XF86_SVGA, XF86_S3, etc. On Thu, May 18, 2000 at 03:32:17PM -0600, Cameron Matheson wrote: > I don't know how to stop X windows (what would the pid be, ps doesn't show > it). > > Thanks, > Cameron Matheson > > > > kmself@ix.netcom.com wrote: > > > Try starting X from a console prompt as follows: > > > > startx wmaker -- 1> startx.log 2>&1 & > > > > If it works, cool. > > > > If it doesn't, look at startx.log and maybe post it. > > > > On Mon, May 15, 2000 at 04:24:00PM -0600, Cameron Matheson wrote: > > > Hey, > > > > > > I long time ago I used to use the new version of WindowMaker with > > > Gnome.
