X does not need to know anything about shadow passwords since libc handles all of that. Check this: # ls -l /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /usr/X11R6/bin/X -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1686 Jun 14 01:59 /etc/passwd -rw-r----- 1 root shadow 1038 Jun 14 01:58 /etc/shadow -rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 11584 Jul 7 12:07 /usr/X11R6/bin/X Do you perms match these? Also, what is contained in /etc/X11/Xserver?
