I really doubt that any files are being deleted. Usually, .el files stay put in someplace like /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/ and byte-compiled versions go in: /usr/share/emacs/19.34/site-lisp/ /usr/share/emacs/20.6/site-lisp/ /usr/share/xemacs20/site-lisp/ /usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/ Peter
