Assuming some well-meaning yet misguided admin around here (really, honest, it wasn't me) decided to delete all files in /var/lib/dpkg, what's the best way to rebuild dpkg's notion of which packages are installed on the system? Also, since it seems that apt is failing, what can I do to resolve this situation?
