Maybe it's because (like me until recently) you didn't realize that vim actually comes in two packages---vim itself and vim-rt. The second package contains the run time files, and you miss a lot of the vim goodies (like, for instance, documentation, and sample config files for syntax highlighting) if you fail to install vim-rt. Since the package vim merely recommends vim-rt (it doesn't depend on it), it's easy to miss installing the run-time files, Jim
