Where did you get the impression that XFree 3.3 wouldn't work on a Thinkpad 365xd? It works fine on my (also recently inherited) Thinkpad 365x (only difference is I don't have a CD-ROM drive) using a stock potato install, which is XFree 3.3.6, I think.
