Hi, if you really need to log in as root via telnet, you must add a line in /etc/securetty and add: pts/0 for only one connection pts/1 for a second connection etc.
However, this is unsecure. For maintenance, use ssh instead (and do not add the lines given above). If you need to acces the computer from a windoze platform, use Putty, a client way better than the windoze one and also ssh.
