If you want USB, forget 2.2.17; it doesn't have USB support (unless you
get a patch from http://www.linux-usb.org/ (good resource, BTW)).  Go
download ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.18.tar.gz
(or .tar.bz2 is a smaller download).  Also, take a look at the output of
"apt-cache show kernel-source-2.2.17" and make sure that you have the
Recommended packages installed.  I think you might be missing
task-tcltk-dev.
