I don't think so. Have you read the README for the program you're trying to compile? Did you look at the output from configure? Probably it said something wasn't found; what was it looking for that it didn't find? To give a good answer to your questions would require some kind of mind-reading capabilities! How is configure failing? As Matthew explained, once you install the required development files to build those programs, it should Just Work, without any need to tell configure where they're installed. If you're having such difficulty compiling these programs yourself, I'd recommend just using the packages instead.
