The book I've gained most from in trying to learn linux has been _Think Unix_ by Jon Lasser (Que, 2000). It does a good job of teaching how to approach tasks when using a unix-type system of whatever variety. Instead of overwhelming the reader with details on specific commands, the book teaches how to use unix commands together to achieve powerful results. _Think Unix_ plus a handbook like _Linux in a Nutshell_ (O'Reilly, 2000)--which is mostly just man pages--strikes me as a pretty good start.
