I use xdm, it is basically the same startup as startx, they both use /etc/X11/Xsession which uses files in /etc/X11/Xsession.d, one of which starts x-session-manager, only if there is no x-session-manager it starts x-window-manager... (yes I tried it, startx really starts kde, just like xdm) erik
