I'm using 3.3.6, when everything was messed up, I did try version 4.0.2,
which I managed to
start at a very low resolution (I had trouble configuring XF86Config-4, and
I was missing a tool
called dexter, I thnk).

Anyway, I've solved the problem. After trying:

dpkg --force-depends -P xbase-clients xcontrib xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi
xfonts-base xfree86-common xfstt xlib6g xlib6g-dev xserver-common
xserver-svga xterm xviddetect

I was able to reinstall XFree 3.3.6..

Eivind.
