I had the same problem as you. but I didn't install the server again via dselect.
Just remove everything of /usr/X11R6/* and /etx/X/* Download the currecnt server from the net ftp.xfree86.org and re install it. Before you start installing it, read the file may.txt . it will tell you howto and don't forget to create your links. greetz, Kim -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Raymond L. Zarling [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Verzonden: zaterdag 17 maart 2001 8:20 Aan: debian-user@lists.debian.org Onderwerp: Can't install (or remove) xserver-xfree86 I am trying to install X 4.0 on my (newly installed) debian 2.2.18-pre21-ide system. I've got it partially-working after creating the missing /etc/X11/X link (I get a window with a primitive xterm and an X cursor using startx, but no pop-up menus and it doesn't launch with gdm). The primary problem is the xserver-xfree86 package configuration during installation failed. Now I am in limbo: It won't let me re-install xserver-xfree86, because it thinks the current version is up-to-date. But it won't let me remove it, and try again either. Here's what happens if I try to install, using dpkg: # dpkg install xserver-xfree86 Reading Package Lists... Building Dependency Tree...
