I am able to mount hda1 (Fat16) just fine but can't do it
with hda3 for some strange reason.

I did try your suggestion though and got this:

localhostnl:/home/wstan# mount -t vfat /dev/hda3 /mnt
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda3,
       or too many mounted file systems
