Can you shutdown X with Ctl+Alt+Bksp? I would highly recommend that you find the source of the system hang, if that's what is happening. I would guess that you are sharing an IRQ with two devices that shouldn't be shared, i.e. your sound card and your NIC. Something along those lines. What might give you a hint is determining what you're doing when the hang occurs.
