I think what has happened is that in the process of upgrading, several fonts were removed - you need to install the font packages for X as well. I'm pretty sure that's the problem. Try: apt-get install xfonts-base apt-get install xfonts-75dpi apt-get install xfonts-100dpi apt-get install xfonts-scalable If I missed any that someone else has noticed, please speak up. Good luck!
