That doesn't tell you much. You may be running some sound server that prevents your audio application from opening the /dev/dsp device. IIRC, most OSS/Lite drivers have exclusive open semantics for /dev/dsp. So, if one program has it opened, anything else that attempts to open it will hang. One of the stated goals of ALSA is to have a shared /dev/dsp. So, the behaviour you see isn't surprising, even if you're running a sound server.
