Reason for the error is that you are missing the XF86Config-4 file that is necessary for X to start. I suggest apt-get install task-windows-system that command should install all the necessary packages for X Windows System and allow you to configure it to your hardware. The GUI that I suggest using is Ximian Gnome. You can go to http://www.ximian.org for more info on the GUI and how to install it.
