You can age it rapidly so that the selection disappears quickly. man gpm, and look at the -A switch. Of course, you can be more specific in disallowing pasting. For example, if you're making selections in a Python/Tkinter application, a listbox, say, you can configure widgets with exportselection = 0 to prevent them interfering with, say, a copy/paste selection already made in an xterm.
