While I'm sure that performance had something to do with the decision to write the kernel NFS code in the first place, the main reason that people have it built into their (Linux) kernels is for the capabilities. Under Linux, the kernel nfsd is able to handle file locks over NFS and the user space nfsd is not. -- That's not gibberish...
