I'm not familiar with pdnsd, but I've seen two plugs for it today and it sounds likely to be decent. But if you want to take the plunge and set up BIND, it's not really that bad... Find yourself a copy of the DNS-HOWTO and you should be in good shape. Once you've created (at least the shell of) any reverse zones you want to have available, grab mkrdns off of freshmeat and use it to keep them up-to-date.
