Strangely enough, I am running a 2.2.19 stock kernel and I get a very similar error preventing me from connecting from home. This was after I had apt-get updated to testing on Saturday June 30th. I certainly get the tcsetattr error above, but not the "Couldn't attach tty to PPP unit 0", though I don't have my log file handy as it is at home.....
