i've never seen that error out of ifconfig before, and can't even find it in the source code for the program. okay, while you're waiting for the knoppix cd, how about you try this: - in /etc/interfaces, take out all lines mentioning eth0, then put the following in: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.111 netmask 255.255.255.0 and then just reboot the whole machine, and see if you get an address out of ifconfig when you get back to a prompt. also, i just have to ask--have you tried this with another cable, and have you tried this in one of the ports on the hub that you know to work? sean
