The option to allow different text modes also has to be available in
your kernel, either compiled in or as a module. Although, someone will
have to check me on that last one because I never use kernels out of the
box and consequently have never used a module in my life except for an
old isapnp card (don't ask). Do a modconf to check if something obvious
is there to turn on (maybe in misc? Like I said I don't know) or
recompile your kernel and the option should be in "character devices" if
you do "make menuconfig" Then change lilo.conf, rerun lilo, and reboot.
Might want to try vga=ask first, since it fails softly if it can't
select the mode you ask it for. :/
